Attention U12/U14 Racers and Parents: Race Day Logistics

With our first race of the season Sunday at Butternut, we wanted to highlight a few logistical items to ensure a smooth race day for our athletes:

  1. Arrival at Butternut: Athletes should plan to arrive at Butternut by 7:30AM on Sunday. We recommend parking in the upper lot at Butternut (veer to the right after the entrance) and we will try to sit in the same general area in the upper lodge
  2. Race Day Registration: Registration and bib pick-up will take place in the upper lodge and usually opens at 7:30. We recommend athletes and/or their parents register immediately upon arrival at Butternut. As part of registration, athletes will need to leave a deposit for their bib (typically $20 or a drivers license) that will be returned to them when they complete their second run and turn in their bib upon exiting the finish corral. Note that Race Day Registration is a separate process from the online registration process that all athletes were required to complete and should have already completed. ALL ATHLETES MUST REGISTER AND PICK UP HIS OR HER BIB ON THE DAY OF THE RACE
  3. Race format: Ski races consist of 2 race runs on 2 different courses set on the same trail. The first run usually starts at approx. 9:30 and the second run will usually start approximately 1 hour after the completion of the first run. This is subject to change based on weather, conditions, etc, and we will make every attempt to communicate as much information as we can as soon as we can.
  4. Course inspection: All athletes are required to complete at least 1 course inspection per race run WITH A COACH. Kirk Kreisher, Pat Quinn, and Garrick Dardani will be the Jiminy Peak coaches at Butternut. All athletes should plan to be on the lift when it opens at 8:15 and meet the coaches at the start of the race course. We will divide into groups at the top for inspection. Athletes may not ski through the course during inspection or at any time prior to his or her race run. Racers must slowly SIDE SLIP through the course during inspection. After the completion of the 1st run, we will determine a time to meet for course inspection prior to the 2nd run.
  5. Race Arena: on race days, the “Race Arena” consists of the race course, the start corral and the finish corral. Only athletes and coaches are permitted in the Race Arena. Your coaches have a wealth of experience in working with athletes on race day and can accommodate anything our athletes require, including any special requests. Parents are not permitted inside any part of the Race Arena, including the Start Corral.
  6. Ski Preparation and required gear: Please ensure every athlete has freshly tuned skis with sharp edges on race day as well as a complete set of slalom gear.
  7. Jackets and Warm-up Pants: Its going to be cold Sunday and we are thankful for the many parents that have volunteered to shuttle jackets and pants from the start to the finish – Please make their job easier by making sure all gear is clearly labeled with names and phone numbers – many of them have identical gear, so labels are important when a pile comes down from the start.

Sunday will be a great day—our athletes have all worked hard and are ready to race.

Please don’t hesitate to contact a coach or member of the parents association with any questions.
